According to its communications minister, the government intends to enact legislation establishing a minimum age requirement for social media users in an effort to safeguard minors online.
Meutya Hafid, the minister of communications and digital, announced on Monday that the ministry is working on a rule that would prohibit the usage of social media by specific age groups. The age restriction was not specified by her.
The minimum age in Indonesia was not specified by Meutya. After speaking with President Prabowo Subianto about the plan, Meutya made her comments late on Monday.
“We discussed how to protect children in digital space,” she said in a video uploaded on the YouTube channel of the president’s office.
“The president said to carry on with this plan. He is very supportive on how this kind of child protection will be done in our digital space,” she said.
The Indonesia internet service providers’ organization conducted a study of 8,700 people last year, and the results showed that 79.5 percent of the 280 million-person nation had internet access.
According to the survey, 48% of kids under the age of 12 had internet access, and some of them used Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok. According to the survey, 87 percent of “Gen Z” users—those between the ages of 12 and 27—had internet access.
A historic rule that forbids social media corporations from recruiting under-16s was approved in Australia late last year.
Social media companies must take “reasonable steps” to stop young teens from having accounts, according to the legislation, which was adopted by parliament in November.
After a year, it is scheduled to go into effect.
According to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, the age limit was “the right thing to do” even though it would not be fully administered, similar to current alcohol policies.
He assured reporters that the crackdown on Facebook, Instagram, and X will result in “better outcomes and less harm for young Australians.”
To protect young users, Singapore has also thought of enacting laws limiting access to social media by age.
