The King Salman Stadium Masterplan and design have been presented by Populous. It will serve as the main headquarters for the Saudi national football team and the largest stadium in Saudi Arabia. Situated next to King Abdulaziz Park in northern Riyadh, the stadium was developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Sports and the Royal Commission for Riyadh City. Completed in late 2029, the arena is also one of the main venues for the 2034 FIFA World Cup, which Saudi Arabia will host. As part of its bid, 11 new stadiums will be built, and four current stadiums will be renovated.
The stadium’s architecture draws influence from the geography of the area. It adheres to the symbolic idea that every new venue in the master plan is like a seed that sprouts and breaks through the earth to expose a new place that is a part of its natural setting. With about 92,000 seats, the main stadium is expected to surpass all other sporting venues in the nation in terms of capacity. In addition, it has 2,200 VIP seats, 300 VVIP seats, hospitality skyboxes and lounges, and a Royal Box.
The King Salman Stadium Masterplan arranges the stadium’s surrounding area to provide easy access and to accommodate a range of events and everyday activities all year long. It includes training facilities, a community sports park, and an athletics stadium to encourage grassroots involvement. Other facilities include multifunctional sports halls and an aquatics center. Connecting the property to King Abdulaziz Park are a community sports park and an indoor sports center.
King Salman Stadium’s compact seating bowl, which satisfies international football standards and may accommodate over 92,000 people for pitch sports and other entertainment events, is designed to maximize the fan experience. In addition to the east stand and skyboxes surrounding the bowl, the west stand provides seats for Royals, VVIPs, and VIPs. The upper and lower tiers are open to general admission. The concourse’s layout promotes accessibility and effective movement.
“Beyond creating advanced sports facilities, the development aims to unite athleticism and the environment, inspiring all who engage with it. To achieve this, the design teams have drawn direct inspiration from nature’s patterns and elements. The design philosophy reflects a commitment to cutting-edge infrastructure while paying tribute to the intrinsic connection between sustainable development, human activity, and the natural world. – Shireen Hamdan, General Manager of Populous KSA”
Saudi Arabia aims to construct 11 new stadiums in Riyadh, Jeddah, Al Khobar, Abha, and the as-yet-unbuilt Neom as part of its preparations for the 2034 FIFA World Cup. Aramco Stadium, which will also host the 2027 AFC Asian Cup, and Prince Mohammed bin Salman Stadium, a new stadium in Qiddiya City with extensive technological elements, are two of the sites that Populous has been hired to develop.
