  • Tesla Unveils the 2025 Updated Model Y Juniper

On Friday, Tesla unveiled an upgraded version of its best-selling Model Y in China, with the hope that an updated interior and a remodeled exterior will help it reclaim market share that rivals like Xiaomi have stolen.

According to the U.S. automaker’s Weibo social media account, the new Model Y, the most popular electric vehicle in the world, costs 263,500 yuan ($35,900), which is 5.4% higher than the previous model in China, its second-largest market.

If regulatory approval is obtained, deliveries in China are scheduled to start in March. Information regarding Tesla’s intentions to release the updated model in other areas was not immediately accessible.

Similar to Tesla’s Cyber truck, the most recent Model Y has a new light bar that runs the length of the front end and a full-width light bar at the tail. Additional improved amenities include a touchscreen for second-row passengers and seats that may be heated or ventilated for comfort in any weather.

The driving range of the long-range version has increased from 688 kilometers to 719 kilometers per charge.

The Model Y, which Tesla originally introduced in 2020, rose to the top of the global auto sales charts in 2023. While the desire for electric vehicles has fallen in other areas, the older model lost some sales momentum last year due to competition from domestic rivals in China.

In 2020, Tesla was the biggest producer of battery-electric vehicles in China; however, Chinese EV competitors have gained market share by attracting consumers with stylish smart car features.

Currently, BYD is the largest EV vendor in China, but Xiaomi, a consumer electronics company, dominated the electric vehicle industry last year, shipping over 130,000 of its initial model, the SU7. The Model Y will be directly challenged by Xiaomi’s first SUV, the YU7, which will be released in June or July.

From 11.7% in 2023 to 10.4% last year, Tesla’s market share in China’s battery electric car industry has declined.

According to earlier reports, Tesla intends to introduce a six-seater version of the Model Y in China around the end of this year.

($1 is equivalent to 7.3314 Chinese yuan).
